Getting Here

Myrtle Beach ShorelineThe weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, the ocean is inviting, and it’s time to get ready for Myrtle Beach Senior Week 2012. Need some basic driving directions To Myrtle Beach? For you first timers heading to Myrtle Beach, we’ve listed below the major in-roads leading to the beach, along with some of the major thoroughfares through the city.

If you’re driving to the beach from either the north or south, Hwy 17 is your major in-road. Hwy 17 “splits” off into two distinct routes. The first split is at Murrells Inlet and just north of the City of Myrtle Beach, into Hwy 17 Business. Hwy 17 Business will take you to just about any destination within the city that you need to go. Once you get into the Myrtle Beach city limits, Hwy 17 is called Kings Hwy. The other split, what locals call “The Bypass” or “17 Bypass” skirts along the outer edges of the city limits.

For those of you driving from the west, perhaps from Interstate 20 or Interstate 95 to the beach, Hwy 501 is your major in-road. Hwy 501 will take your directly into downtown Myrtle Beach and ends at the Atlantic Ocean. From Hwy 501, you can intersect either “The Bypass” or Hwy 17 Business.

Another newer west in-road is Hwy 22, it is a much less traveled road. Hwy 22 or “The Conway Bypass”, is an excellent alternative for those visitors staying on the north end of Myrtle Beach or in North Myrtle Beach. Hwy 22 intersects with Hwy 501 just north of the City of Conway and ends at Hwy 17. From here, you can get to anywhere in the city.

Ocean Boulevard or what’s commonly referred to as “The Boulevard”, runs north and south through Myrtle Beach. The Boulevard is home to most of the ocean front hotel and motels. In an effort to make The Boulevard more pedestrian and vehicle traffic friendly, the city has been hard at work widening and improving turn lanes and pedestrian walk ways. The Boulevard is an exciting place with all the sights and sounds you’d expect from an ocean front road, so please be careful as you “cruise The Boulevard”.

Robert Grissom Parkway is a relatively new city street that runs in a north/south direction roughly halfway between and parallel to The Bypass and Ocean Boulevard. Grissom Parkway is accessible from Hwy 501 as you travel east into the city of Myrtle Beach.

The City of Myrtle Beach is roughly layed out in square city blocks and is actually pretty easy to get around if you know a few things. The city street numbering system starts at First Avenue, which is the middle of town. Then going north or south, the streets numbers get sequentially larger ie. Second Ave. North or Second Ave. South. So, the further away from downtown you are, the larger the avenue number. Myrtle Beach city avenues run east and west and most can be accessed from Hwy 17 Business and/or Ocean Boulevard.

Enjoy your stay during Senior Week 2011. Please be safe and smart.
